I am a writer who doesn’t write nearly enough. I am a mother whose daughter is sitting here in her pajamas in late afternoon. I am a gardener whose garden died in the drought. I am a seamstress (sewist?) who is intimidated by her sewing machine. I am a two-time young survivor of breast cancer who likes to pretend all that never happened. I am an HGTV addict who sometimes looks around and realizes she lives in an environment slightly worse than a dorm room.
As you can see, my life is absolutely perfect.
I started this blog in 2006 to share my breast cancer treatment with my friends and family. Since then, I’ve had 10 surgeries, been through chemo, been through radiation, and been through so many drugs I can no longer count them. Breast cancer is a part of my life, but I get sick of talking about it.
In the meantime, life has gone on. There has been bad: death of loved ones, my divorce after more than 11 years of marriage, watching my parents struggle incredibly after losing their home in a flood, adjusting to my life after both divorce and cancer, incredible financial struggle, my daughter having open heart surgery, and, most recently, the very sad end of my long-term relationship with someone I loved deeply. There has also been good: watching my daughter grow into an extraordinary young lady, enjoying lots of great friends and family by my side, getting some really great travel opportunities and learning to enjoy the smaller things in life.
I am in the process of trying something new with this blog. After struggling from 2007-2011 with what to write (only breast cancer related? can I expand into my life? and how do I do that while respecting the privacy of others?), then having to use the blog once again for breast cancer treatment information after my recurrence in 2011, I’m ready to do something different.
In July 2012, I reworked the navigation of my blog to help highlight some of the other things I want to write about: parenthood, DIY projects and life in general. Breast cancer is still there. I have more than 265 posts on the subject — it’s not going anywhere. But I’ve now given myself blog permission to post about all of the other things I have going on.
I’m looking forward to it.
Other things you might want to see about my life:
- I’ve blogged about my daughter since she was born, but I have let that go the last few years as I struggle with trying to figure out what to do with it as she gets into those school years where a mom blogging about her might not be so cool.
- I’m addicted to Pinterest.
- I work for the Sisters of Providence and occasionally blog there.
UPDATE: In April 2014, I moved this blog to a self-hosted WordPress site. I am still working out some kinks, but most of this is still very true!
