Ann Richards

Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards died yesterday of esophageal cancer.

She’s the white-haired, sharp, funny Texas Democrat who didn’t have much love for either Bush I or II (not to be confused with Molly Ivins, also funny, sharp and with big white hair, who said in January she was having chemotherapy for a recurrence of inflammatory breast cancer). The current president defeated Gov. Richards for re-election in 1994.

I always admired Gov. Richards because she was bold and spunky – embodying what I think are the two best characteristics of the modern southern woman. She was an advocate for women’s issues. She never seemed to be afraid to say what she thought.

She has lots of funny quotes attributed to her. I like this one:

“Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels.”
